GameTape is an iPhone app for recording a game, cutting the moments that matter out of it, and sharing them with people you choose. It is operated by GameTape, in the United States.
Contact for anything in this policy — privacy questions, access and deletion requests, takedown requests, or a complaint: privacy@gametapeapp.com.
You must be 13 or older to hold a GameTape account. Children under 13 do not sign up for GameTape: a parent or guardian holds the account, and a child appears in it only because an adult put them there. People 13 to 17 may hold a teen account. We ask everyone for a birth year (never a full date of birth) so the app knows which side of 13 and 18 someone is on. A teen account posts only where coaches and parents can see it. A coach or trainer may write to a teen, and a parent is always copied on those messages — there is no private thread between an adult and a teenager on GameTape. A teen with no parent contact on file receives no adult messages at all, and a parent can stop them at any time, without giving a reason, by writing to privacy@gametapeapp.com — we are building the same stop as a one-tap switch in the app and into every copy we send a parent.
We collect the least we can and still do the job. Everything below is collected because a specific part of the app needs it.
| What | Why it exists |
|---|---|
| Your name and email | To make an account, sign you in, and reach you about your account. Nothing else. |
| Your phone number, if you sign in with it | To text you a sign-in code. Nothing else unless you separately agree to it. |
| Video and photos you record or choose | The product. Recorded in the app, or picked by you from your phone's library. When you ask Scout to find your games, GameTape reads the dates and places of your videos on your phone to group them — nothing is uploaded by that. Video reaches us only when you send it: a clip you send to someone, or a game you send to the Vault. |
| Players you add, and which clips are theirs | So a reel can be about one person: a first and last name, a birth year (never a full date of birth), a team and, if you give one, a jersey number. |
| Where a game was filmed | So a tape can say "Fontana, Saturday" instead of nothing. One location is kept on your phone for each game, with its town name; we do not keep a trail, and our servers do not receive the coordinates. To turn a location into a town name, your phone asks Apple's map service, as the Photos app does. |
| People you invite | Only the person you pick when you send an invitation. We do not read your address book. |
| Reports and blocks | If you report a clip or block someone: what you reported, why, and when, and who you blocked. Used only to review the report and keep people safe. The person you block is not told. |
| Basic app and device information | Crash reports and errors, so we can fix what broke. Not used to identify or follow anyone. |
This is the part that matters most, so it is the longest.
Before any information about a child under 13 is collected, we obtain verifiable parental consent. That consent is not a checkbox. It records which child, which features, and what the consent covers — and it is recorded per child, so a parent with three kids has three separate consent states.
A parent may refuse further collection at any time without deleting what already exists, and may withdraw consent entirely. Withdrawal is recorded with the time it took effect.
On request to privacy@gametapeapp.com, a parent or guardian can review what we hold about their child, correct it, and have it deleted. We verify that the request comes from the parent before acting, because handing a child's footage to whoever asks would be worse than not answering.
There is no open messaging in GameTape. Where children can respond to one another at all, they choose from a fixed list of prepared responses — nobody can type a sentence to somebody else's child.
A recording of a youth game contains other children, other parents, referees and spectators. Two things follow. First, when you upload, you are telling us you had the right to record and to share what you recorded. Second, if your child appears in someone else's video and you want it removed, write to us — you do not need a GameTape account to ask, and we will act on it.
GameTape is rated 13 and over. We chose that rating because the app is built for families sharing their own footage inside a closed Family or team, with no public feed, no directory of players and no way for a stranger to find anyone — and because a child under 13 does not hold an account here.
When you install GameTape, your app store tells us which age band you are in. We use that answer for one thing: deciding what the account can do. We delete the age data the store sends us once we have used it to set up the account. We do not keep it, we do not build a profile from it, and we never ask a child to prove their age by sending us a document.
A parent can have their teenager’s account suspended at any time, without explaining why and without being asked twice. Write to privacy@gametapeapp.com and we act on it: the account stops posting, messaging and receiving, and the family’s footage is kept safe and reachable by the parent rather than deleted. We are building this as a switch inside the app, and as an automatic response to the app store telling us a parent has withdrawn approval. Until those ship, the address above is the way, and it works.
We do not keep personal information indefinitely. We keep each thing only as long as the purpose it was collected for still exists.
| What | How long |
|---|---|
| Video and clips | Clips you send stay with us so the people you sent them to can watch them; games in the Vault stay until you remove them. Deleting your account removes both. Anything else you want gone, write to us and we remove it within 30 days, including from backups. |
| Account information | While your account is open, then deleted within 30 days of closure. |
| Consent records | Kept longer than the data they authorised — they are the proof that permission existed, so they outlive it by design. Held up to 3 years after the account closes. |
| Reports you file, and blocks | A report is kept until it is reviewed, then as a safety record for up to 3 years; material reported as child sexual abuse is preserved as federal law requires. A block lasts until you remove it or either account closes. |
| Crash and error reports | Up to 90 days. |
Deleting your account deletes the footage we hold for you — the clips you sent and your Vault — and your records. It does not touch video on your own phone, and it does not remove footage another family filmed or a child another guardian also looks after. We say that plainly because quietly keeping things is common and we do not do it.
We use a small number of service providers to run the app. They process information on our instructions and for no purpose of their own. They do not receive it to use for themselves, and none of them are advertising companies.
| Kind of provider | What they do, and what they get |
|---|---|
| Cloud hosting | Runs our database and sign-in, and stores the clips you send and what you put in the Vault. Receives your account information, the records that describe your games, players and consents, that footage, and ordinary network information such as an IP address. |
| Apple | Distributes the app, handles any purchase, runs Sign in with Apple, and turns a location into a town name. We never receive your payment details. |
| Runs Sign in with Google, if you use it. Receives only what that sign-in needs. | |
| Text and email delivery | Sends sign-in codes and account email, and routes mail sent to us. Receives your phone number or email address. |
| Crash reporting | Collects crash reports so we can fix what broke. Receives error information and basic device details. It is set up not to collect your footage, your name or your email. |
| Voice and music generation | Makes an original song, or the announcer's call on a play, when you ask for one. For a song it receives only the style you picked. For a call it receives the words of the call and your player's first name (first and last name only for a player we know is 13 or older) or jersey number. It never receives your footage. A call is made once and kept on your phone. |
| Video processing | Shrinks full games you send to the Vault so they take less room. It runs on a computer we operate, receives the game video while it works on it, and removes its working copy when the job is done. |
| App update delivery | Delivers updates to the app. Receives your app and device version and ordinary network information such as an IP address. |
| Website visit counts | Counts visits to this website so we know how many people find it: the page, the site that sent you, and your browser and rough country, worked out from your IP address. It sets no cookies, does not follow you to other sites, and builds no profile of you. It does not run in the app. |
| Web fonts | Serves the typefaces on this website, including these legal pages. Your browser asks it for the font files, which shares your IP address and the page you are on. |
If the kinds of providers we use change, this page changes with it, and where the change is material we will tell you in the app and ask again where consent requires it.
Permission to hold a child's video and permission to use their image are two different things, and they are constantly confused. To be clear about ours: the licence you give us is operational only. We use your footage to store it, process it, and deliver it to the people you send it to. We do not use your family's faces in marketing, advertising, or promotion of GameTape, and we will not without asking you specifically and separately.
Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or send you a copy. Write to privacy@gametapeapp.com and we will respond within 45 days.
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect and why, to correct it, to delete it, to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and to opt out of sale or sharing. We do not sell personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising, so there is nothing to opt out of — but the right exists and you may exercise it. We will not treat you differently for doing so.
If you believe something on GameTape infringes your copyright, write to copyright@gametapeapp.com with the details listed on our Report a video page, and we will act on it. We remove infringing material, we tell the person who posted it, we give them a way to answer, and we end the accounts of people who repeatedly infringe. The full process, including how to answer a removal you believe was a mistake, is on the Report a video page.
Not every claim over a video is a copyright claim. If you are a league, club, school or tournament organiser and you believe footage of your event should not be here, or you are a parent who objects to your child appearing in somebody else’s clip, that is a different request and it goes to the same page. We do not treat it as a copyright notice and we do not need you to own a copyright to make it.
We disclose information about you only when we believe in good faith that the law requires it — in response to a subpoena, court order or search warrant that meets the requirements described on our Legal requests page — or when disclosure is necessary to prevent death or serious physical injury, to protect a child, or to protect the rights, property or safety of GameTape, our users or the public.
The contents of your account — videos, clips, notes and messages — are disclosed to law enforcement only under a search warrant, except in an emergency involving danger of death or serious physical injury. We tell you about a request for your information before we respond unless the law or a court order prohibits it, or telling you would put a child or anyone else at risk.
When we receive a lawful request to preserve an account, we keep a copy of what we hold for it for the period the request requires, and we pause any deletion of that material on our servers for that time.
If we become aware of apparent child sexual abuse material, we report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and preserve it as federal law requires. See Child safety.
Footage is held in access-controlled storage and moved over encrypted connections. Sessions are kept in your phone's private app storage, which iOS walls off from other apps. No system is perfect, and we would rather say that than imply otherwise.
When we change this page we update the date at the top. If a change is material — what we collect, who receives it, how long we keep it, or how the app makes money — we will tell you in the app before it takes effect, and where the law requires consent to be renewed, we will ask again rather than assume continued use means yes.
